hey mama, in the lead up to mother’s day we wanted to highlight some of our favourite mama’s out there to help us feel a little more connected, supported, heard & seen during this time.
each day we will be sharing with you an interview we did with one of these beautiful women & we can't wait to introduce you to them.
for day six we spoke with Sarah Sprange...
biglittlethings. | So lovely Sarah, tell us a bit about yourself & who you’re a mama to.
Sarah | I am a mother to two beautiful little boys: Ari, 3; and Koa, 8 months.
Before becoming a mother, I worked for 10 years as a flight attendant, but now I am a stay at home mum. We currently live in Sydney with my wonderful husband Daniel.
B | tell us either about your journey to motherhood OR through motherhood
currently.
S | After trying to fall pregnant for several years, Ari was conceived through IVF. Following this, we lost a baby at 13 weeks gestation, and then were blessed with Koa, who was conceived naturally!
B | How has going from one child to two changed your life? Any tips or tricks for mama’s about to have their second?
S | Going from one child to two was a big adjustment. I think I underestimated how challenging it could be at times. Trying to entertain and be present for a toddler was difficult when you are running on very little sleep!
The advice I have is: accept offers of help, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Also a reminder that those newborn days are fleeting. It will get easier, and seeing your two children relate to each other will make it all worthwhile!
B | How’s your breastfeeding journey going with Koa? Was it similar to Ari or completely different? What are some words of wisdom you can pass on to other mama’s breastfeeding?
S | I am still breastfeeding Koa and I cherish the bonding time we have together through this. It was certainly easier breastfeeding second time around... I actually really struggled breastfeeding Ari.
I remember thinking “why did everyone make it look so simple and beautiful when it is so painful and uncomfortable?” I used to do a lot of expressing and bottle-feeding Ari until I followed my gut and got some professional help.
It turns out Ari had a tongue tie, and once we had the operation to fix that, breastfeeding become much easier. I understand why there is lots of support around breastfeeding through hotlines and support groups, and my advice is: use it!
B | if you could go back in time; what would you say to your pregnant self?
S | I actually had some pre-natal depression during my pregnancy with Koa. So it’s hard to know what to say to that person struggling to listen to a voice of reason. So I would simply say that everything is going to be okay.
B | what are some biglittle moments of being a mama?
S | There are far too many biglittle moments to cover them all! But being a mother of two, my favourite moments are seeing my children relate to each other. There’s something so special about that!
B | what/who inspires you as a mama?
S | I am inspired first and foremost by my mother. She always put her kids first (and still does actually!) And any other mother that bases their parenting around love. Nothing is more important when raising children than showing them love, so seeing other mothers do this, inspires me to be a better one.
B | lastly, a very important question - what’s your Top 3 favourite products from biglittlethings?
S | Number one has to be the Charlie Crane rocker. From 0-6 months, I put Koa in this pretty much every day! (and apart from being useful, it looks so nice in the home!)
I also adore the Susukoshi bodysuits... these make nappy changes so easy without having to wrangle clothes over baby’s head.
And now that Koa is a little older, I am loving the Rommer bibs to catch all the mess he makes!
